Wrexham for City of Culture 2025

Wrexham has made it into the final four places shortlisted for the 2025 UK’s City of Culture.

WHAT IS THE CITY OF CULTURE?

The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) is running the City of Culture competition.

This year is the first time that the UK City of Culture bid is open to non-cities, allowing towns and regions to apply.

Wrexham County Borough submitted Wrexham’s application. It applied for the entire county, not just the town.

It has now made it to the final four along with Bradford, County Durham, and Southampton.

The Council had to explain how they would use culture to grow and strengthen the local area. Showing how they would use culture to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

BACKING THE BID

The Council encouraged local businesses and voluntary organisations to back the bid. As a local business, this is something we were keen to be involved in.

We have been attending events associated with the bid and have placed signage on the outside of our offices in support. We are also promoting the bid on our website and social media channels to show our support as a local business.

WHY WIN?

Winning the City of Culture title would be a huge asset to Wrexham. It would bring investment and jobs. Showing the town in a positive light to an international audience.

Previous winners have hosted The Mobo Awards, Turner Art Prize, and the Radio 1’s big weekend. Former winner Hull has had an investment of £219million because of its win. It also generated 800 jobs as a direct result of winning the bid.

EVENTS

At the start of the year, the Council asked communities and organisations to apply for a grant. Up to £1,000 was offered to host an event or activity promoting the City of Culture bid. There are several events running until the end of May, many of them free. See what’s on offer HERE
